Durban - Red Eye - Body Politic - 2010 |
||
This
commission for the Red Eye festival in Durban happened in September 2010.
Beverley Carpenter/Mxolisie Sithole worked with the street children of the
area and responded to the festival title of 'Body Politic'. They made films
that were screened simultaneously. On one side of the street by the we see
teenagers as heroic figures and on the other, in large scrolling text in
Zulu and English, their profiles and achievements as surfers and footballers
alongside stats about how many years they have been living on the streets,
competition prizes, ages and anything else they wish to say. Some of these
statements were very poetic ..'when you are waiting for a wave you can hear
your heart beating'
